Leren Labs Joining the Tech for Palestine x Thaura Hackathon at MozFest 2026
Leren Labs will be participating in the Tech for Palestine x Thaura Hackathon, taking place on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Canòdrom – Ateneu d'Innovació Digital i Democràtica in Barcelona, Spain. Hosted as a key practical event under the Mozilla Festival (MozFest) 2026 umbrella and delivered in partnership with Thaura.ai, the one-day sprint convenes 100 software engineers, creatives, and strategists to build viable technical bridges away from complicit platforms toward ethical, privacy-preserving infrastructure.
The Challenge: Enabling Mass Migration from Complicit Tech
While awareness of tech complicity and surveillance capitalism is at an all-time high, everyday users, grassroots movements, and independent organizations often find themselves locked into extractive ecosystems. Moving off proprietary platforms—spanning centralized cloud hosts, data-mining collaboration tools, and opaque communication suites—remains daunting without automated tools, straightforward migration paths, and resilient alternatives.
The hackathon is structured around a single, urgent mandate: How do we make it radically easier for users to migrate from complicit technologies to ethical alternatives?
Over an intensive 10-hour sprint (9:00 to 19:00), cross-functional teams will collaborate at Canòdrom to deliver working prototypes paired with clear go-to-market and scaling strategies. Winning solutions will receive follow-on incubation, capacity building, and scaling support through the Tech for Palestine Incubator, which has already backed over 90 initiatives focused on accountability, digital resilience, and human rights advocacy.
Why Leren Labs is Participating: Sovereign Infrastructure for Free Expression
At Leren Labs, our engineering ethos is grounded in building open, decentralized systems where individuals and institutions own their digital presence, safeguard their communications, and resist arbitrary surveillance and censorship.
Taking part in the Canòdrom sprint extends our broader focus during Barcelona Open Tech Week, allowing our engineering team to contribute directly to community-first tooling:
- Lowering Migration Barriers: Creating automated export/import scripts, decentralized data synchronization pipelines, and zero-knowledge identity bridges that enable teams to switch away from surveillance-heavy suites without operational downtime.
- Proving Authenticity & Source Protection: Leveraging insights from our work on Decast.Live to demonstrate how decentralized media provenance, tamper-proof storage, and selective credential disclosure can safeguard sensitive documentation, on-the-ground reporting, and community organizing from digital tampering and targeted de-platforming.
- Building with Ethical AI & Protocols: Collaborating with Thaura.ai and participating teams using a curated, independent stack—ensuring that the development workflow itself remains completely uncompromised by corporate surveillance architectures.
Sprint Agenda at Canòdrom (October 31)
- 09:00 – 10:00 | Arrival & Setup: Registration and logistics at Canòdrom.
- 10:00 – 11:00 | Challenge Briefing & Pitches: Rapid 60-second idea pitches, alignment on migration targets, and formation of cross-disciplinary squads.
- 11:00 – 17:00 | Build Sprint: Intensive engineering and strategy sprint leveraging Thaura.ai and ethical open-source libraries.
- 17:00 – 18:30 | Prototype Demos: Live 5-minute technical demonstrations and strategic execution pitches before the jury.
- 18:30 – 19:00 | Showcase & Incubator Awards: Announcement of projects selected for continuing support under the Tech for Palestine Incubator.
Looking Ahead
Ethical technology cannot remain an abstract philosophy; it must be built into code, validated through working prototypes, and made immediately accessible to communities on the ground.
Leren Labs is proud to build alongside fellow engineers, advocates, and organizers at Canòdrom this Saturday. Follow our updates throughout the day as we share prototypes, open repositories, and practical steps toward an equitable, self-sovereign digital ecosystem.
